Every solar-water-heating system has a solar energy collector that faces the sun and either heats water directly or heats a fluid that, in turn, is used to heat water. The heated water may be moved through the house with pumping mechanisms (active systems) or by natural convection (passive systems). In almost all cases, solar water-heating systems work alongside conventional gas or electric water-heating systems, which activate when necessary.

The key component of a THERMOSOL® solar water heating system is the type of solar energy collector used. The most common solar energy collector for hot water is the flat plate collector. THERMOSOL® uses glass evacuated tube collectors, which are the most advanced and highest performing technology available for harnessing and storing high temperature heat energy from the sun.

The evacuated tube collectors are more efficient than traditional low technology flat-plate collectors, that can offer high performance it is only under operating conditions of high ambient temperature and strong direct sun. The tubes are more efficient as:
· the tubes are vacuumed, they are almost always unaffected by outside temperature or weather conditions. The wind cools the flat-plate collector.
· they perform well with both direct sunlight and diffused sunlight. The flat-plate collectors loose their efficiency when clouds and haze reduce the suns intensity.
· the evacuated tubes are round, the suns rays are always
perpendicular to the tubes, thus reducing reflection. In comparison, a flat-plate collector that is in a fixed position, the sun is only perpendicular to the collector at midday when the sun is directly overhead. In the morning or afternoon the suns rays are reflected which results in wasted energy.
